Honda Malaysia sales hit all-time high in July 2012

Honda Malaysia (HM) has bounced back from a difficult spell that included a production halt at its Melaka plant last October, due to flooding in Thailand. The comeback is capped by an all-time monthly sales high of 5,045 units, achieved in July.
“It is with great joy and excitement that we can share this good news with our customers. We had to start this year on a challenging note, however we strived to recapture our high spirits and confidence believing that our Challenging Spirit will help us rise stronger from the dire straits in 2011. And today we are most delighted to announce this record sales achievement in July,” said Yoichiro Ueno, MD and CEO of Honda Malaysia.

The “downtime” from setbacks caused by natural disasters in Japan and Thailand last year gave HM time to plan its future investment and expansion. The company opened a new warehouse in February, completed a new Pre-Delivery Inspection Center (PDI) and recently announced plans to start local assembly of hybrid cars and build a new production line at its Melaka plant.
HM also introduced eight new models/variants this year – Jazz Hybridfacelifted CityCR-Z CVTFreed S,facelifted Insightnew Civic/Civic Hybrid and the Jazz S. July’s record sales were led by the City and Civic – the B-segment sedan chalked up 2,217 units or 44% of July’s total, while there are 3,000 bookings for the Civic now.
“We have achieved the V-shape recovery to come back to the market. We will continue giving our best effort to receive the support and trust from our valued customers in Malaysia. The July sales record would surely encourage our associates, dealers and all business partners to work harder in providing the best products and greatest value to Malaysians. The second half of 2012 looks promising and we want to assure our customers that we will continue providing products and services of the highest quality,” Ueno added.

World’s Fastest Man Usain Bolt headlines Nissan’s new global brand campaign

Nissan has managed to get the World’s Fastest Man onboard its new global brand campaign. Triple Olympic gold medalist and multi world record holder Usain Bolt has been an owner of a Nissan GT-Rsince 2009, and loves the Godzilla’s 0-100 km/h in 2.8 seconds acceleraton, naturally. That’s not all, though.
“I was looking on the Internet and I came across the Nissan GT-R, and they (automotive media) were saying it was the best streetcar ever made. Nissan GT-R is a wonderful car and perfect for me. I love everything in it. I enjoy driving it, and I feel completely safe, and that is the key thing for me,” the 25-year old Jamaican said.
This is Nissan’s first-ever global brand campaign, and it will include a series of airport billboards featuring Bolt and his GT-R. Titled “WHAT IF_”, the campaign features iconic Nissan products and technologies. Handled by Nissan’s ad agency TBWA, the ad first appeared in major airports earlier this month and will eventually reach all major international airports.

The Tactics n Lies Begin..

PKR’s aim of promising to make cars cheaper if the Pakatan Rakyat opposition pact takes over power in the upcoming general election has taken to the road, with the launch of a nationwide campaign to promote the issue.

According to reports, the party kicked off its Turunkan Harga Kereta (Lower Car Prices) campaign yesterday, which will see 50,000 vehicle stickers and flyers explaining PKR’s proposal being distributed at tollbooths throughout the country this coming weekend.

The timing coincides with the expected surge in traffic during the coming week. “The campaign will take advantage of the ‘balik kampung’ holidays in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri, so information about Keadilan’s proposal to reduce car prices by gradual abolishment of excise duties will reach the whole country,” PKR’s communications director Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad told reporters.

The logo for the campaign – which has its own Facebook page – does not represent any political element so all Malaysians, regardless of political belief and background, can unite and agree on the matter, he added.

PKR has promised to make cars a cheaper proposition for the rakyat by reducing the triple-tax burden – excise and import duties as well as sales tax – imposed on cars in the country. While slashing excise duties would cut government income by around RM8 billion, the party said that revenue could be earned through other means without having to impose additional financial burden on taxpayers, it was earlier reported.

It said that should it come into power, the party would offer a complete revamp of the National Automotive Policy (NAP) so that car prices will be made competitive and actual costs reflected, with the aim of improving the disposable income of Malaysians and reducing household debts.

ESP Stability Control is a must – Malaysian motorists deserve better active safety in our cars

You’re driving along the highway to KLIA to drop your wife off to catch a flight. The skies are pouring down at full blast, and your wipers are struggling to keep up. There’s loads of water on the road, so you keep to the middle lane to reduce your chances of aquaplaning. You think there’s plenty of time to reach the airport, and since you’re taking precautions, everything should be dandy.
But not everyone is as conservative as you in the wet. Another car behind you speeding along in the fast lane suddenly starts spinning, and spinning, and spinning – and you watch it slowly come closer and closer to you through your rear view mirror. It’s spinning 360 degrees while sliding towards you at a higher speed than you’re driving forward with full traction! BAM! The other car hits you at highway speeds and sends your car veering almost sideways out of control towards the barrier.
Seems a little far fetched, but this actually happened to me some time ago. And I didn’t hit the barrier, because my car was equipped with stability control. In seconds, stability control did its magic, applied brake force to the necessary individual wheels to stabilise the car. I regained control of the vehicle without much effort, and could have proceeded with my journey if I had to. A potential disaster had been averted, and I got away with just a broken bumper and a tail lamp.
There are so many potential situations where stability control can potentially save your life. Another driver might be merging into your lane without bothering to check his wing mirrors to see if he’d be ploughing straight into you – and at highway speeds, an evasive manoeuvre could see you lose control as the car starts to fishtail.
Most people are unaware of what stability control is. The layman interprets car safety as being passive – which means the car must be good at saving your skin when you crash. He thinks the body must be “solid.” and he kicks the bumpers, shuts the hood and slams the door at the showroom to apparently test this by the sound the body parts make. This must be an acquired skill like wine tasting, as it doesn’t make sense to me at all. And then he counts the number of airbags in the car – the more, the better.
He also takes into account if the car has ABS, but he thinks this means the brakes are stronger, not the real meaning of ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System), which basically allows you to steer while you’re braking, so you can steer around the object that’s in your way. The point is, ABS isn’t passive safety, but it’s active safety, essentially a vehicle system that works to prevent you from crashing, rather than try to cushion the impact of a crash.
Another form of active safety is stability control. There are really not many people that know what stability control is. So when market surveys are done, this important safety feature doesn’t show up as being desired by the potential buyer, and so the bean-counters at the car company decide that they don’t need to put this feature in to sell cars
We have even seen cars that come with stability control in one generation and with the next generation, the feature is gone, all because market studies showed consumers did not ask for it, and so it didn’t matter when it came to sales numbers whether such an important safety feature was included or not.
Since 2009, Euro NCAP began awarding three Safety Assist points to a car if stability control is fitted as standard across the model range, or if it is an option on every variant and the manufacturer also expects to sell at least 95% of cars with the system as standard equipment.
From 2012, stability control has been regarded with such importance that Euro NCAP will only reward equipment with a five-star rating when ESC is fitted as standard across the whole of the model range, and the feature has also become compulsory for all new cars sold in the EU. The NHTSA has done that for 2012 as well.

Petronas Coffee break Campaign

The Petronas Coffee Break Campaign is back for the upcoming Raya balik kampung exodus. The campaign, held for the 13th consecutive year, starts from August 15 to 18, with a second phase scheduled for August 23 to 26.

During the campaign, Petronas will offer practical road safety tips in addition to complimentary snacks and beverages at 32 participating stations across Malaysia. In addition, Petronas will be fuelling 50 St John Ambulance Malaysia’s vehicles for their 24-hour highway emergency service during this festive season, something they have been doing for 18 years.

Proton and Perodua will provide free car inspections at selected stations, and Petrosains will deploy its Petronas StreetSmart team to share road safety tips through a series of interactive games for the family. As for the food and drinks, Old Town coffee, Tropicana Twister, Julie’s biscuits and Super O-Ring snacks are on the menu.

To locate participating stations, iPhone and Android smartphone users can download the free Petronas Pitstop app. Launched earlier this year, the app also helps one monitor fuel expenses, check Mesra points, receive promo updates and connect to Petronas’ Mesralink customer service.
