Malaysia car sales to recover in 2010

Auto sales in Malaysia fell by a smaller-than-expected 2 percent in 2009 but will rebound and could hit a record high in 2010 amid the global economic recovery.

Malaysia is Southeast Asia's largest passenger car market. The car sales fell to 536,905 vehicles in 2009.

It exceeded the association's forecast of 500,000 vehicles as sales perked in the last quarter of the year, buoyed by government stimulus measures which boosted consumer spending, improved business confidence. There were also aggressive sales campaigns.

The stronger performance in the fourth quarter, underpinned by Malaysia's economic recovery, is expected to extend into 2010, with auto sales seen rising 2.4 percent to 550,000 vehicles, beating the record high of 552,614 units sold in 2005.

Malaysia's economy is forecast to rebound to grow 2 percent to 3 percent in 2010 after a slump in 2009. However, the government has cut spending for 2010 to rein in a swollen budget deficit and plans to revamp expensive fuel subsidies in the next few months.

Sales is expected to rise to 566,500 vehicles in 2011, and to surge to 618,000 by 2014.

BEST SELLING CAR BRAND IN MALAYSIA

Compact car maker Perodua was the best-selling car brand in 2009, retaining its leadership for a fourth straight year. Its market share rose to 31.1 percent from 30.5 percent in 2008.

National carmaker Proton gained ground with a 27.6 percent share, up from 25.9 percent in 2007. Japanese carmaker Toyota Motor Corp. secured 15.2 percent of the market, followed by Honda Motor Co. with 7.2 percent and Nissan Motor Co., with 5.9 percent.

Malaysia maintained its status as the largest passenger car market in Southeast Asia with sales of 486,342 units, or nearly 91 percent of its total auto sales in 2009.

CAR SALES DROP IN 2009

Malaysia's 2 percent drop in auto sales in 2009 was small compared to a 28 percent decline in Singapore, 20 percent in Indonesia and 16 percent in Brunei.

Thailand registered an 11 percent decline but remained the largest auto market in Southeast Asia with total sales of 548,871 units, mostly commercial vehicles. Only Vietnam and Philippines posted higher auto sales.

World's most popular cars

April 28, 2010

The Toyota Corolla is the world's most popular car.
Toyota’s Corolla was the world’s top-selling car last year.

Toyota’s recent massive recall of more than 8 million cars highlighted the potential hazards of building a world car, but the company has also reaped the rewards, producing three of the top 10 selling cars in the world in 2009.

The Japanese giant basically builds the same car for every market in the world, with minor modifications to suspension and engine line-ups to suit local tastes. The high-volume approach pays dividends in lower tooling, development and production costs.

According to figures compiled by economic forecaster IHS Global Insight and published by Forbes magazine in the United States, Toyota’s Corolla was the world’s most popular car in 2010, while the Camry and Yaris also made the top 10.

The “One Ford” strategy - which threatens the extinction of Ford’s locally-built Falcon – has seen the Focus small car and the Fiesta city runabout move into second and third place respectively. Fiesta’s global sales should improve even further when the car is launched in the US later this year. The car toppled Europe’s perennial best-seller, the Volkswagen Golf, in the first quarter of this year.

Volkswagen’s dominance of the booming Chinese market has pushed its Golf and Polo into the top 10, while Honda’s popularity in the United States sees it field two top-10 cars, the Civic small car and the mid-size Accord.

Number eight on the top seller list will surprise many Australians; the Peugeot 207 small car is a niche player in our local market – and doesn’t sell in the United States – but its popularity in Europe seals it a place among the blockbuster sellers.

Frost & Sullivan 2010 Malaysia Excellence Awards

Leading Malaysian corporations were honoured at the inaugural Frost & Sullivan 2010 Malaysia Excellence Awards presentation last night. The Excellence Awards covered six sectors which included the automotive sector.

Kavan Mukhtyar, Partner & Head of the Asia Pacific Automotive & Transportation Practice at Frost & Sullivan said that 2009 was a challenging year for the automotive industry in Malaysia with total industry volume declined by 2% year-on-year.

“However, we have seen remarkable performance from some Malaysian automotive companies which have managed to weather the storm and emerged stronger. Today, we honor those companies that have shown resilience and exemplary achievements during the crisis,” he said.

Four companies in the automotive industry received awards during the event, namely Proton Holdings Bhd, Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional Kedua Sdn Bhd (Perodua), Ingress Corporation Bhd and Public Bank Bhd.

Proton Exora

Proton Saga
Mr. Mukhtyar said that a common factor among all automotive recipients is that they have managed to increase their revenues despite the global economic crisis by innovating and reacting quickly to accommodate their customers’ needs and preference.

“The award recipients offered products that meet the requirements of their customers and are committed to provide enhanced after-sales service. They also aggressively reached out to their customers through multiple channels,” he added.

He also noted that the recipients continued with their new product launch plans despite setbacks in the global economy. “The move definitely helped most companies in the automotive industry increase their sales and put them at an advantage over their competitors in 2010 as the economy recovers,” Mr. Mukhtyar added.

He said that the award recipients were identified based on an in-depth research conducted by Frost & Sullivan analysts. The award categories offered each year are carefully reviewed and evaluated to reflect the current market landscape.

Perodua Viva

Proton clinched two awards – Best Passenger Car Model of the Year for the Proton Saga and Best Automotive Debut Model of the Year for the Proton Exora.

The Best Automotive Debut Model of the Year award recognizes Proton’s commitment to continuously offer products that are customer-centric in terms of the specification and pricing, said Mr. Mukhtyar. “The launch of the Proton Exora definitely brought excitement to the local MPV segment as it is a first by a local car manufacturer,” he added.

Perodua received the Best Passenger Car Value-for-Money Model of the Year for its Perodua Viva for the third consecutive year.

Ingress Corporation Bhd was presented with the Automotive Component Manufacturer of the Year award while Public Bank received the award for the Automotive Finance Company of the Year.
